When a journalist is killed, it is not just their voice that is silenced: Press freedom is your freedom. Over 30 years ago, the United Nations recognized May 3 as World Press Freedom Day: a global reminder of the importance of press freedom and an opportunity to assess its health around the world. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) found that at least 100 journalists and media workers have been killed since we last marked World Press Freedom Day. Tragically, on this World Press Freedom Day, our work is needed more than ever. Unable to serve an administration that enables such atrocities, I have decided to resign from my position at the Department of State. Whatever credibility the United States had as an advocate for human rights has almost entirely vanished since the war began. By resigning publicly, I am saddened by the knowledge that I likely foreclose a future at the State Department. Yet just recently, the State Department ascertained that Israel is in compliance with international law in the conduct of the war and in providing humanitarian assistance. After four years of then-President Donald Trump’s efforts to cripple the department, State employees embraced Biden’s pledge to rebuild American diplomacy.

CNN —Al Jazeera said its bureau chief in Gaza, Wael Al Dahdouh, lost his wife, son, daughter, and grandson in what it said was an Israeli airstrike on Wednesday. “Members of the family of our colleague Wael Al Dahdouh, including his wife, son, and daughter, were martyred in an Israeli bombing,” Al Jazeera wrote in an on-air message. An emotional Al Dahdouh was seen in a video crying as he stood over his son’s body, wrapped in a white sheet. His son Mahmoud was 15 years old, and his daughter Sham was seven years old, Al Jazeera reported. Al Jazeera anchor Abdisalam Farah announced the deaths on air, visibly struggling to keep his composure and tearing up.

Three other journalists have been reported missing or detained, the CPJ said. Among the dead were 15 Palestinian and three Israeli journalists. Issam Abdallah, a Reuters videographer from Lebanon, was killed in southern Lebanon on Oct. 13. Reuters has called on Israel to probe the circumstances of his death, Israel said it was investigating the killing. The CPJ said its figures were as of Oct. 18 and that it was investigating all reports of journalists killed, injured, detained or missing in the war.

CNN —Some journalists are making the ultimate sacrifice while covering the war between Israel and Hamas. At least seven journalists have been killed in the Gaza Strip since Hamas launched its brazen assault on Saturday, according to press freedom groups and media reports. Meanwhile, journalists based in Gaza, which has been battered with airstrikes from Israel, are at an even greater risk. For those reasons, and other logistical difficulties, there are very few Western journalists in Gaza. “They have made those sacrifices to show what is happening on the ground,” Mansour added, speaking about the at least seven journalists killed this week while reporting from the Gaza Strip.
